Erik Menkveld [the Netherlands, 1959] made his debut as a poet in 1997 with the collection De karpersimulator (The Carp Simulator), which had a favourable reception. His third collection, Prime time, has recently appeared. In his poetry, Menkveld often makes ‘dodges across generic boundaries’, transposing himself into an old boxer, a musical note, beauty or the hunter Actaeon. His poetry is witty, displays an intense love of language and is extremely musical – his debut collection, for example, contains a wonderful series about composers.
